Mapp vs The Awesome Thing For Friday [Jan. 8th, 2010|09:38 am]

mapp
[Current Location |E15, London]
[mood | awake]
[music |The Big Lebowski, in fact. I got no sleep last night, so I'm resorting to comfort films, okay? Okay.]

Chorus: In wayfarer's worlds out west was once a man,
A man I come not to bury, but to praise.
His name was Geoffery Lebowski called, yet
Not called, excepting by his kin.
That which we call a knave by any other name
Might bowl just as sweet. Lebowski, then,
Did call himself "The Knave", a name that I,
Your humble chorus, would not self-apply
In homelands mine; but, then, this Knave was one
From whom sense was a burden to extract,
And of the arid vale in which he dwelt,
Also dislike in sensibility;
Mayhap the very search for sense reveals
The reason that it striketh me me as most
Int'resting, yea, inspiring me to odes.
(In couplets first, and then a sonnet brave
As prologue to the tale of this the Knave.
Behold him, then, a-tumbling softly down
To pledge his love immortal to the ground.)
We stray now from fair Albion and from France
And see no Queen of bawdy songs and cheers
And in an angel's city take our chance
For stupefying tales to our ears.
To war on Arab kings acoast we go,
Needing a man of times, though hero not;
Hear me call him not hero; what's in a hero?
Sometimes there's a man, your prologue's thought.
The Knave, though scarcely man of honour'd grace,
Nor hero Olympian, nor yet employ'd,
Was nonetheless for all his time and place,
The man befits the circle he's enjoy'd.
A man of lazy ways, of epic sloth:
But, losing train of thought, I've spake enough!

Benefits! )

Since I'm feeling very depressed right now, and my CBT told me to focus on the good, and I had been wanting to write about life in general over the past few days anyway, here it is.

Snow, cold, and warm cooking )

The cat dealing with the cold )

A note on vaccines )

Why funerals are so important )

And that's really all that's going on here. I try to carry on as normal, even though it feels like it's anything but. Hugs to all.

House Keeper [Jan. 6th, 2010|11:55 am]
heartofpargon
Dunlarpin now employs a house keeper for a couple of hours a week. This is obviously because the house is always so messy

If guests at Dunlarpin would like to make contributions towards the costs of this, we would be very grateful!

This is absolutely NOT an excuse to slack on keeping tidy!

Weather Warning - This weekend [Jan. 6th, 2010|11:54 am]
heartofpargon
As many may have noticed, the weather looks rather interesting this weekend.

Should it prove unreasonable to be LARPing, we will ensure other activities are undertaken... sitting around and socialising? A day in the pub? A normal walk in the snow? Snowball fights? A day of rock band? A movie marathon? All sorts of possibilities! And of course, going out on Saturday night

Saturday looks ok atm, if probably quite covered in snow (a good thing). Sunday's forecast is less good....

An update!!

Well, we are plus one ferret, which was completely wild three days ago and is now tame enough to carry in my coat. Gill caught it in a ferret trap in her dark shed because wild ferrets have been after the chickens. I bagged the second one caught on saturday. He is a dark polecat called Loki.

Cute huh?

And as of today I am officially running my own buisness: Morris Starlight's Flying Circus, and have set up a website of sorts, courtesy of myspace:

Aubrey is getting huge, and Gandeys built up on Salerie car park today.

X-Files goodness [Jan. 5th, 2010|09:34 pm]

[music |Stoke City v Fulham on the radio (3-2 to Stoke)]

Was prodded into X-Files mode a few weeks ago when I went in to Forbidden Planet to ask about Christmas temp jobs and they informed me that they'd appointed them all, so consoled myself by purchasing Skin and Whirlwind, the two X-Files novels that came out in 2008. Subsequently, a post on LJ by [info]natalie_adcock about her Christmas presents and the ensuing conversation has led to me making the following purchase: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Files-Complete-Collectors-DVD/dp/B000X41AY8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1262726852&sr=8-1

OK so I prooooooobably shouldn't really spend my Christmas money on stuff like this when I 'm not in paid employment, but given that the RRP is £200 - TWO HUNDRED QUID - and these are going for £66, which by my (admittedly not very good) calculations is less than a third of the RRP, NO WAY am I passing that up! OK so Mum might freak out a little if she's home when they arrive, but come on, they'll last me for aaaaaaaaaages, and considering the difference in prices...

MK Dons 1 Burnley 2 [Jan. 4th, 2010|09:50 pm]

FA Cup 3rd round.so not league but given that we lose every time another match happens before I've posted about the previous one, I'm not going to tempt fate!

First goal was a penalty - needless to say it was Graham Alexander who took it! Because of this, they were talking about records of penalty-takers, one of whom was the legendary Leighton James (a past Claret) and someone else who played for us at one point. Second goal was some horrendous defending on the part of MK Dons. It wouldn't be Burnley, however, if we made it nice and easy for ourselves!

I'll save my rant on the Wimbledon-Milton Keynes thing for another time. Only real shock of the round was a REAL shock - Leeds beat Manchester United, at Man Utd!!! Mind you, I watched the match on TV and Leeds wanted it waaaaay more. This is the first time in my lifetime that Leeds have won at Old Trafford.

As for Bolton... They want our manager. There are currently "talks" taking place. He played for them about 15 years ago, but NO NO NO! DON'T LEAVE US, OWEN COYLE!!!!!

Mapp vs The Zombie Mapp [Jan. 4th, 2010|02:18 pm]

[Current Location |Chez Pink, London]

Fairly zombified at the moment, due to getting a grand total of about an hour of sleep last night. However, I've done a reasonably good job of pumping my body full of caffeine today, so I should be able to keep going while Dr Colin's visiting The Big City.

Plans for today vaguely involve descending upon the British Museum, followed by a film, and then... who knows? Excitement and intrigue abounds!

Again, can't say much as there wasn't much on Match of the Day. We had some good chances and some bad luck.

And now Bolton have sacked Gary Megson so, because Owen Coyle used to play for Bolton, he's being tipped as favourite to take over, despite MANY MANY statements he and the club have released saying that he's going nowhere. Why won't they get the message?!?!?!

Happy New Year [Dec. 31st, 2009|03:57 pm]

ash1977law
Well, Christmas in the US is certainly different than in the UK. No boxing day for a start. The day after Christmas Day is just December the 26th, just another day in the year. Christmas meals are odd too, there is no tradition here of a Christmas meal, just a nice meal that you have on the 25th. Their equivalent of the Christmas meal is the Thanksgiving meal. In a way what a British person would consider Christmas is Thanksgiving and American Christmas combined.

Here is Carl Sagan

[1] The roads here are awful. Most have no curb, and even the main roads are not properly finished to a European standard – just gravel over concrete. Americans seem to HATE paying taxes and would rather pay 25% of their wages to a health care company than pay 5% to get universal health care. The roads, they pay out about $100 a year per car to repair chips in windscreens rather than pay $50 a year per car to properly surface the roads. As much as we British complain about our crumbling infrastructure at least we have one.
[2] American stores tend to be both very big, and very far away.
[3] Oh sure, if you want a Raspberry and Vanilla Chai or Herbal No Caffine Peppermint and Bannana drink it is fine, but getting a drink of tea that actually contains tea is impossible. If you are lucky enough to actually find a place that serves tea they bring you a cup of hot water, a selection of tea bags on strings, and some condiments (usually not including milk, sugar, or lemon). The concept of boil-water/add-tea-bag/brew/remove-tea-bag/add-milk-and-sugar seems alien to them. It is like asking for a chicken sandwich and getting some dough and an egg.

Fixing the laws of PhysX [Dec. 31st, 2009|04:43 pm]

draxar
Rather than trying to tell people in different comment trees:

ccleaner didn't visibly change anything.

Going through the registry deleting everything refering to PhysX or F:/, worked. After that, I was able to install the PhysX thing I'd downloaded, and Borderlands and Titan Quest worked. Overlord still doesn't, it's now saying "I can't find this particular DLL".

I'll post more details when I get back, currently I'm getting ready for a Russian Christmas.

Help me, oh Wise and Mighty Internets (aka "I've broken the laws of PhysX") [Dec. 31st, 2009|02:40 am]

[music |Michael Nyman - The Libertine - Rochester's farewell]

So, a while back I ripped apart my old computer (which the government bought for me way back when), as it'd stopped working a fair while ago, and I'd got a new one, and it still had useful stuff in it.

The main thing I grabbed was a hard disk. For a while I used it, and it was good. Then it stopped working, with a clicking sound when it tried to work. Annoyingly I lost some music on there, but managed to put most of that back together from various sources. However, I'd also installed various other things on there. And now certain things on my computer are going "Invallid Drive F:" or similar, when I try and do things.

One of the things that it seems must've been on there was the PhysX software that various games use. Hard disk no longer working thus, not accessible there. However, every time I try and install PhysX on my actual core hard drive, it says "Error 1327, Invalid Drive F:/". I'm assuming it's trying to update the old version, but failing due to it not being there. And it's not giving me the option to perform a new install or something like that.

I tried the "Driver Sweeper" program that someone suggested, but that's not changed anything.

For reference, the two games I believe it to be affecting are Overlord II (installed through steam) which downloads fine, but crashes when I try and load it, and borderlands (installed from a disk) which crashes at the end of the install process.

So, wise and mighty intertubes, can anyone suggest how I might be able to fix this, and partake of my sweet, sweet, gaming goodness?

24/01/10 - First Saga Adventure [Dec. 30th, 2009|10:54 am]
heartofpargon
Yeah, I know I was going to be writing something silly and godlike (everyone was going to be playing gods) but other than a we're-immune-to-everything-until you-convince-us-you're-real atheist encounter and the damage call of "Over 9000!" I really couldn't get my head around it. It will happen in the future

So, more importantly, I'm going to be running the first build up adventure to Saga. It will probably be filled with important stuff although red herrings are also likely (Attack of the Crimson Murlocs).

Have cleared the booking form (mainly) because I can.

Send me character details if you're coming to Saga (you can send me them anyway but if they're clearly marked Saga then I'll read them)

Happy New Year
